The boating season does not last forever. When it is time to haul out or put the boat in storage, your marine generator needs just as much attention as the engine and hull. Skipping winterization is one of the most common causes of costly generator repairs in the spring. A little time now saves a lot of frustration later.
Here is how to properly winterize your Fischer Panda marine generator before storage.
Why Winterization Matters
Marine generators operate in a demanding environment. Salt buildup, moisture, and sitting fuel are the three biggest threats during the off-season. Without proper preparation, you risk corroded components, clogged fuel systems, and cooling passages that can crack if residual water freezes. None of these are inexpensive fixes.
Step 1: Flush the Cooling System
Fischer Panda generators use a 100% fresh water-cooled system, but the raw water side of the cooling loop still needs to be flushed before storage. To do this:
- Place a hose in the raw water strainer inlet
- Start the generator and run fresh water through the system for 5 to 10 minutes
- Next, place the hose in a bucket of biodegradable antifreeze
- Restart the generator and run it until you see the antifreeze mixture coming out of the exhaust
- Once complete, close the through-hull fitting
This process clears out any salt or debris and protects the raw water passages from freezing during cold months.
Step 2: Treat the Fuel
Diesel fuel that sits for months can degrade and leave deposits in the fuel system. Add a quality diesel fuel stabilizer to the tank before your last run of the season. Running the generator for several minutes after adding the stabilizer allows it to circulate through the fuel lines and injectors.
Step 3: Open the Capsule for Air Circulation
Once the generator has cooled down, open the capsule and leave the upper latch open between both halves. This allows air to circulate inside during storage, reducing the chance of moisture buildup and mold on internal components.
Step 4: Turn Off the Battery Switch
Before walking away, turn the battery switch off. This prevents any parasitic drain on the batteries over the storage period and protects the generator’s electrical systems.
When Spring Comes: Re-Commissioning Checklist
Getting back on the water is the fun part. Before your first start of the season, run through these steps:
- Replace the raw water impeller
- Inspect all hoses and clamps for wear or cracks
- Open the through-hull fitting and turn the battery switch back on
- Change the oil and replace fuel filters
- Prime the fuel system and bleed any air before starting
- Run the generator without load for 5 to 10 minutes, then verify there are no leaks before applying load
Keep Your Manual Handy
Every Fischer Panda model has a specific maintenance schedule. Always consult your owner’s manual for model-specific service intervals and any additional winterization steps that apply to your unit. If you have questions or want a technician to inspect your generator before or after storage, Fischer Panda’s service team is available seven days a week.
