Gas Versus Diesel Generators: Airing the Facts Oakland Park, FL –Under the best of conditions, a gas powered nonroad engine, such as those used in marine generator applications, produce at least 65 times more carbon monoxide (CO) than a similar sized nonroad diesel. Using the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standard for average permissible CO emissions for gas and diesel nonroad engines as a guide, a 19kW diesel, for example, would produce CO emissions of 10.035 (grams/kW/hr) while the same-sized gas engine produced 650.20 (grams/kW/hr). “The gap only widens when you factor in a poorly maintained, under performing gas engine, which produces even larger amounts of potentially deadly CO,” added Chad Godwin, Marine Sales Manager for Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based Fischer Panda U.S., manufacturers of 100% water-cooled diesel marine generators. “We’re seeing more and more manufacturers and dealers switching from gas to diesel generators specifically based on consumer safety.” |
